Israel Dial grew up a child of the community.

From an early age he served as an Alter Boy at St. Gabriel’s Church, where he strengthened his spirituality as well as his organizational skills working with the priest.

It was also at St. Gabriel’s that he found his love of singing, thanks to the urgings of his grandmother. He sang solos during Sunday masses, and during services for the holidays such as at Christmas and New Years.

It wasn’t long before Israel became an integral part of the St. Gabriel’s Church choir under the direction of Terry Clahane.

Israel’s mother (Christine Busby) spurred on his growth as a singer by involving him in a several music programs such as Share The Warmth, El Sistema, Samson Arboite and most recently at the Union United Church Band and Union United Church Men’s Choir.

As a high school student at Selwyn House, Israel defined himself with his multi-disciplinary efforts. He was one of a few students who participated in The Duke of Edinburgh's International Award, a self-development program that measures the physical and mental capacity as well as the level of community involvement of young people between the ages of 14 to 24.

Israel showed off his talent on the guitar and singing and his physical prowess on the football team as a a rower for Selwyn House. He also displayed his resilience on a three-day-three-night outdoor sojourn in Northern Canada.

As a volunteer, Israel helped out at food banks and at church events across the community.

For his efforts, Israel was one of four to receive the Duke of Edinburgh's International Silver Award and is now striving for gold.

Now at John Abbott College, Israel is involved in several extracurricular activities including as a member of the Black Student Union, Congress (Student Union) and Model United Nations.

Through it all, he continues to hone his musical skills at the Union United Church Band as well as performing with the Union United Church Men’s Choir.
